Corn Chiain

Bronntar corn cuimhneacháin Chiain Gairnéir (Corn Chiain) go bliantúil ar pháiste Rang 6 ar an té is fearr a léiríonn spiorad na Gaelscoile- ‘scoil atá níos mó ná scoil’.

Ba dhalta i Rang 4 i nGaelscoil na Lochanna é Cian Gairnéir, nuair a d’fhulaing sé frithghníomhú an-neamhghnách do víreas an slaghdáin choitianta. Fuair sé bás go tobann agus go neamhthuartha ón bhfiabhras FIRES ( Titimeas Fhrithleighis Fiabhras Spreagtha). Roimhe sin, ba bhuachaill sláintiúil é Cian agus bhí sé an-tógtha leis an spórt, ach go háirithe leis an bpeil agus an iomáint. Ghráigh sé a chlann agus a chairde agus bhí sé réidh i gconaí don chomhrá, don chraic agus d’aon iompar spraoiúil a bhféadfadh sé ealú leis…

Bhí grá ag Cian dá scoil. Thaitin an ealaín leis, sheinn sé an fheadóg stáin, ba mhacaomh na ngasóg é agus bhí sé mar bhall den chlub Karaté áitiúil. Ba é an samhradh an seasúir ab mhó a thaitin leis, bhí dúil aige san fhánaíocht agus sa rothaíocht, bhain sé sult as an trá agus ba snámhaí láidir é. Go gonnta, ghráigh sé agus mhair sé an saol go lán agus go saibhir. Fuair Cian bás ar an 2ú Aibreáin, 2014 ag aois 10 mbliana agus 10 mí d’aois agus tá a thuistí, Deirdre agus Jason, a dheartháireacha Ronán agus Senan, a dheirfiúr Orlaith, a theaghlach sínte agus a chuid mhór cairde ina mharthanóirí dó.

Sa tslí is gur féidir cuimhneachán Chiain a bhuanú i nGaelscoil na Lochanna, thionscnaigh clann Chiain corn ina chuimhne i 2016, an bhliain go mba cheart do Chian a bheith i Rang 6. B’fhéidir go foirsteanach, bronnadh an corn i 2016 ar an mbeirt dhlúthcairde ag bhí ag Cian, Denis Ó Colla agus Rodhan Ó Murchú.

Bronntar ‘Corn Chiain’ go bliantúil ar pháiste i rang 6. Tá dhá bhrí leis an gCorn; tá sé ann i ndíl chuimhne ar Chian agus ann chun aitheantas a thabhairt don pháiste is fearr a léirigh thar an bhliain acadúil Rang 6 spiorad Ghaelscoil na Lochanna. Tá sé bronnta ar pháiste a bhí tuisceanach, comhbhách, lách, cinéalta agus a léirigh meas agus grá ar dhaoine eile.

D’fhéadfadh sé a bheith bronnta ar pháiste a léirigh crógacht in aghaidh an angair, nó ar pháiste a sheas go neamhleithleasach chun difir a dhéanamh. Ní bhaineann aidhm an Choirn le gnóthachtálacha acadúla nó spóirt ach chun moladh a thabhairt do pháiste a léirigh go seasta tréith an chairdis agus an tuisceana go cairde eile agus go múinteoirí agus go foireann ar fad i bpobal na scoile. Tá sé bronnta ar pháiste a thaistlíonn an aistear breise ar son daoine eile, a n-iompraíonn iad féin go neamhleithleasach, i.e. dalta a bhfuil móráltacht

Chríostaí mhaith acu, dalta a roinneann an ‘grá’…

Bronntar an corn ag ócáid bliantúil Lá Sláin do Rang 6 agus coinníonn an páiste an Corn don bhliain agus tugtar cuireadh dóibh filleadh an bhliain dár gcionn chun an chéad bhronnadh eile a dhearbhú. Bíonn an buaiteoir ainmnithe ag na páistí i Rang 6 leis an bhfocal deiridh faoin gcinneadh ag na múinteoirí agus an Príomhoide. Coinnítear taifead gach bliain ar na buaiteoirí agus ar an gcúis gur bhuaigh siad é.

Tá na corn tiomnaithe i ndíl chuimhne ar ár gcara, Cian Gairnéir, a bheidh go deo inár gcroíthe. … “Tá daoine speisialta inár saolta nach bhfágann ariamh fiú agus iad imithe uainn.”

The Cian Gardner memorial cup (Corn Chiain) is presented annually to the 6th class pupil who best represents the spirit of Gaelscoil na Lochanna, ‘scoil atá níos mó ná scoil’.

Cian Gairnéir was a 4th class pupil in Gaelscoil na Lochanna when he suffered an extremely rare reaction to a common cold virus. He died suddenly and unexpectedly from Fever Induced Refractory Epilepsy (F.I.R.E.S.). Cian had previously been a healthy boy who was mad about anything to do with sport especially hurling and football. He loved his family and … friends and was always up for a chat, a laugh and what he could get away with Cian loved his school. He loved art, he played the feadóg stáin, was a cub scout and a member of the local karate club. Summer was Cian’s favourite season, he enjoyed hiking and cycling, loved the beach and was a strong swimmer. In short, he loved and lived his life to the full. Cian died on 2nd April 2014 aged 10 years, 10 months and he is survived by his parents, Deirdre & Jason, his brothers, Ronán and Senan, his sister, Orlaith, his extended family and his many friends.

In order to perpetuate Cian’s memory in Gaelscoil na Lochanna, Cian’s family inaugurated a memorial cup in 2016, the year Cian should have been in Rang 6. Perhaps fittingly, two of Cian’s best friends, Denis Ó Colla and Rodhan Ó Murchú were jointly awarded the ‘Corn Chiain’ in 2016.

The ‘Corn Chiain’ is awarded annually to a 6th class pupil. The purpose of the award is two-fold; it is in memory of Cian and it is also to honour the pupil who over the academic year in 6th class has best represented the spirit of Gaelscoil na Lochanna. It is awarded to a pupil who has been thoughtful, caring, understanding, kind, considerate, respectful and loving to others. It could be for a pupil who has shown courage in the face of adversity or a pupil who has selflessly stood up and made a difference when they could. The purpose of the award is not to focus on academic or sporting achievements but rather commend a pupil who has consistently shown caring, understanding & friendship towards his/her friends and teachers and staff in the school community. It is awarded to a pupil who goes the extra mile for the benefit of others, shows selfless acts, i.e. a pupil who has good Christian morals, a … pupil who shares ‘the love’

The award is presented at the annual Lá Slán event for Rang 6 and the pupil who receives the award keeps the trophy for a year and is then invited to come back to the school the following year to witness the next winner receiving the award. The winner of the cup is nominated by Rang 6 with the múinteoirí and Príomh oide having the final say as to who is the most deserving of the award for any particular year. A record is kept in the school of each year’s winner and why they merited the award.

The cup is dedicated to the memory of our friend, Cian Gairnéir who will be forever in our … hearts. “There are special people in our lives who never leave us even after they have gone.”
